Welcome

Heartshine Homestead nurtures vegetable and herb plant starts and produce for sale to our local community.

We just adopted two shelter dogs! We will be taking a break from the farmers market for the rest of the 2020 season so that we can spend our time and energy getting them settled and trained on the homestead.

We will be taking orders by special request however, if there is something in particular you’re looking for, such as our homemade energy bars, a bag of cherry or yellow pear tomatoes, some fresh chard, or a handful of crisp carrots or bright beets. We can meet you in Monte Vista or at the Russell Lakes parking lot on Hwy 285 near Saguache on Saturdays to hand off your goods. Contact us to place an order.

Our Philosophy

At Heartshine Homestead, our goal is to live, work, relax, and utilize resources in a way that respects the delicate balances and mighty forces at play throughout the natural world. We consider ourselves to be the temporary stewards of this gorgeous 43-acre patch of high-altitude wilderness in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and we make every effort to leave as little trace of human activity as possible as we go about the construction and operation of our venture.

We grow our plants in a beyond-organic fashion. Our products are 100% free from manufactured pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. We are guided by permaculture philosophies and techniques in our farming and building practices, so as to benefit from Mother Nature’s gifts while simultaneously taking care of the ecosystem we are honored to be a part of. We emphasize soil-health-focused, regenerative methods and no-till gardening. We are off-grid, minimize our use of fossil fuels, and strive to use plastics only when necessary. We pride ourselves in reusing, repurposing, reclaiming, and recycling at every juncture possible.

Greenhouse Climate Battery
Installation of permaculture climate batteries as we constructed our greenhouses. Perforated pipe is buried 5’ below the soil surface, with the ends sticking out of the earth. This allows heat, air, and moisture to circulate between above- and below-ground to passively maintain an ideal climate for plant growth and to extend the growing season.

We believe that human-to-human connection is indispensably valuable and it is important to us to give back to our community on an ongoing basis, so we routinely donate a portion of our produce and proceeds to our local food banks. Thank you for sharing in our dream of lovingly nourishing our fellow humans’ minds, bodies, spirits, and relationships in healthy, holistic, connected ways that honor the natural environment! YOU make our hearts shine!
